Off the record (of course ) I had a call from our Fiat Financial Services Zone Manager last week.

He, and everyone else that does the same job across the country, had been asked to call their dealerships and ask what we thought was needed to help improve 500 sales.

Along with the usual (free insurance offers, 0% APR etc) one of the most popular answers was a 5 year warranty and a servicing plan similar to MINI's TLC...

...maybe they'll listen, maybe they won't!

But anyway, as Il Presidente has already said, the simple truth is, there isn't a 5 year warranty on the 500 not because Fiat don't have enough faith in it, there isn't a 5 year warranty on the 500 because Fiat don't need to offer it to make it competitive (as they have to on Grande Punto and Bravo).

Fiat don't want you to keep your car 5 years, they want you to change it after 3 or (preferably) less. By only offering a 3 year warranty more people are more likely to change their car sooner.

Really - they have slipped up with me then - my car was bought never to be sold, but to be a family heirloom.

Trouble is, both of my daughters want it now!

there is an advantage of having a shorter warranty - the sooner it ends the sooner you can service the car yourself!

the only things i claimed on warranty on my Cinq Sporting was a speedo cable and head at 27k miles

rewind a few years and a one year warranty was all you got on a new car, and nothing worth having on a used car

i really don't see that having the extra warranty length factors high in the purchase decision

manufacturers like Hyundai/Kia are offering a 7 year warranty, does that make them quality??
